Chateau Fontaine: Discover Award-Winning Wines in Leelanau Peninsula
Ever wondered what makes a vineyard truly exceptional? Discover the magic behind Chateau Fontaine, an award-winning winery nestled in the heart of Leelanau Peninsula.
The Beginnings of Chateau Fontaine
Dan and Lucie Matthies, along with their son Doug, embarked on their winemaking journey in 1989. It all started when horticulture expert Dr. G Stanley Howell from Michigan State University visited their land and recognized its potential. The unique topography, southern-facing slopes, and the lake's temperature buffering created ideal conditions for grape growing.
The First Vineyards
The Matthies family planted their first vineyard by hand, starting with Chardonnay grapes. These grapes laid the foundation for their future success. Following this, they expanded their plantings to include Pinot Gris, Riesling, and an additional 13 varietals such as Viognier, Auxerrois, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Today, Chateau Fontaine boasts three distinct vineyards across 75 acres, each chosen to maximize the potential of its specific varietals.
Opening the Tasting Room
In 2000, Chateau Fontaine opened its tasting room to the public. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with accolades pouring in from wine competitions across the United States. Awards like Best of Class, Best White Wine, and numerous Double Golds and Golds have become a tradition for Chateau Fontaine.
The Leelanau Peninsula AVA
The Leelanau Peninsula American Viticultural Area (AVA) is renowned for producing unique and delicious wines. Chateau Fontaine has been a proud member of this winemaking community for over 20 years.
